Maximizing the packing and travel experience.
The Mojo line of rolling luggage, duffels and backpacks satisfies a unique niche in the industry by adding pro team and collegiate logos to a quality line of travel gear. Mojo is the only company to hold the license in the travel gear category for 4 major professional leagues and over 100 universities and colleges. The brand not only focuses on the sports branding, but also the design of the product to maximize the packing and traveling experience.
In 2009, Mario Simonson, a savvy businessman, had an idea — Licensed Sports Travel Gear. Over the course of the next 3 years, he purchased the license to manufacture products under the NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, NCAA and Team USA brands. His full product line offered thousands of SKUs with the various team logos and luggage/bag styles, but the cost to keep inventory of his full offering was impossible. Being an innovative entrepreneur, Mario came up with a made-to-order process allowing his company to customize the luggage after the order was placed. His solution took what would have been an inventory of 4,000+ SKUs down to just over 1,000 with 4,000 unique combinations.
This unique process for creating the finished product at the point of fulfillment was much more than the traditional pick, pack and ship model. The company needed a fulfillment provider who could enable programming to build the finished SKU on the fly and have the proper training to create the customized piece of luggage. Special equipment would also be needed to apply the selected logo panels to the luggage.
The initial launch with DM Fulfillment was a learning process for both parties. The engagement required upfront programming to allow a transmitted order for one SKU to trigger two individual SKUs that would come together to create one finished product. The in-house software development team at DM Fulfillment was able to systematically accommodate the unique SKU assembly process so that orders could flow through without manual intervention.
In addition to the special programming, the process required implementation of QC procedures and hands-on training for applying the logo panels. An area within the fulfillment center was designated for the MOJO product line and 3 commercial heat presses were purchased to attach the logoed panels to the products.
With both parties highly invested in the successful fulfillment of Mario’s product line, they monitor the business closely to quickly address any productivity issues and process improvements. Returns are kept to a minimum with the training provided by Mario and the QC procedures that were implemented in the fulfillment center. The partnership allows Mario to be very hands-on with his business essentially managing his fulfillment as if it’s his own in-house team without the overhead expense, human resource challenges and managing to seasonal/promotional swings in his business.
The SKU assembly programming and DM Fulfillment’s integration with online retailers has led to seamless fulfillment of the product line regardless of the sales channel.
